Adaptive Fashion

One of the most frustrating things about fashion is that not all trends or styles will work for you, especially if you have special needs. Duster sweaters can be too long if you are in a wheelchair, some jeans can be too restricting and don't work with orthotics, and just getting dressed period can be difficult if you have limited movement.. that is why I am super excited to share this post today because it combines 2 of the things I'm passionate about - fashion and also helping others in the special needs community. So I have put together a list of some great brands and stores that have started making adaptive clothing.

CLOTHES:

TOMMY ADAPTIVE
Tommy Adaptive from Tommy Hilfiger has several different options available for kids and adults. They have items that have velcro, magnets, and that are sensory-friendly. They even have skinny jeans with a magnetic hem opening that makes wearing braces and orthotics way easier (and they are really cute too!). My favorite piece from Tommy Adaptive is the Stripe Sweatshirt in pink. It has closures at both shoulders that expand the neck opening making it super easy to put on.

CAT & JACK
Cat & Jack from Target has a lot of great options with several different adaptive features like hidden abdominal access, school uniforms, sensory-friendly items, and diaper friendly. They have basic designs but also options for current styles & design available in stores at Target which is cool. But this brand is only for kids.

KOHL'S
They have several adaptive brands like Jumpingbeans, Chaps, and SO with sizes for adults and kids. They have pretty normal colors and designs but they offer a lot of different adaptable features like G-Tube access, flat seems, 2-way zipper, and tons more! They have a lot of really good basics!

SEVEN JEANS
Seven Jeans is only for adults, but they have really good quality jeans and a lot of different styles and adaptable features like velcro and magnets to replace the normal zipper and fly, velcro side seems for leg braces and orthotics, and very soft and stretchy jeans to make it easier to move and to dress, which a very important thing for me in jeans.

SHOES:

NIKE
Nike FlyEase is a collection of different types of shoes that are easier to get on because of hidden zippers, straps, and fold down options. The Step In is a shoe with velcro at the ankle that you can unstrap and put your foot in easy peasy even with ankle braces on!

BILLY FOOTWEAR
Billy Footwear is a brand that has a lot of cute shoes that are also adaptive! They only have one adaptive feature but it's the perfect one, which is a zipper around most of the shoe to make it easier to put shoes on with braces!

(One thing I do for shoes is to get high top Converses two sizes too big and take just the ankle boot of my braces ... they hide inside the high tops perfectly!)

Hope this helped someone today to find fashionable and adaptable cloths!

XOXO,
Riley

  1. I am an OT and recently found friendly shoes, an adaptive shoe company that makes the most stylish and functional kicks on the market. My patients love them & not made in China like these other companies referenced. Check them out www.friendlyshoes.com

  2. Hi Riley, I am Aubrey White. My Grammy and your grandma are friends. I like your outfit especially your shoes. I have childhood idiopathic arthritis and I like to wear tennis shoes but I do not need to wear any braces on my legs. I am glad that I found your blog and maybe sometime I can get your phone number and we can talk. Love, Aubrey
